The year was 1979. I was an 8 year old little boy, just beginning karate training at the local dojo. Really it was an old garage, but carpet had been laid down and duct taped together to make a carpeted surface for training. There was one lady in the class and I was the only kid. This lady happened to be the instructor’s wife and was the only one in class who could do the splits, all three ways.

As a young boy, I was totally impressed by that. I don’t think up until that point I had ever seen anyone do those stretches. I know I had seen the other men in class attempt the splits. When sensei (teacher) would say, ‘okay, spread your feet as far as you can.’ The class would all simultaneously try to go all the way down. The men in the class moaned and groaned when they tried but this lady just plopped all the way to the floor. Making it look easy.

One day after class, I gathered the nerve to approach her and ask her advice on how I too could become able to accomplish this amazing feat. Our class bowed out and there was usually about 20 to 30 minutes before my mother or father came and picked me up. They knew I liked to stay around and get some extra training in with some of the twenty-something younger men who had taken me under their wing.

This particular day was a summer day, humid and very hot. Class usually finished around eight and it was still daylight and a stifling 80 degrees or so in this garage building. I crept up behind the lady in a ninja like fashion, well as ninja like as an 8 year old, 70 pound kid could be and tapped her on the shoulder.

She hadn’t seen me approach so the tap on the shoulder was a surprise. She whirled around in a startled way looking straight over my head. The last person she expected to approach her after class was this skinny little kid who was barely a yellow belt.

I swallowed, and gather my courage….

Hurricane Flat SplitsHow are you able to do that stretch thing and no else can?” I asked with my eyes locking on to hers."

She looked down at me and in a firm almost snappy way said one word, “STRETCH.”

I thought for a second and came to a quick conclusion.

“Isn’t that what we do every day when we come to class?”

She turned back to her conversation, and sighed loudly. Then she whirled around and said,

Yes kid, but to do what I do takes a little more than that.”

I said thank you and walked back to my corner I had been standing in waiting on my parents. Looking back now, that one instance set the wheels spinning that would change not only my life but hundreds of students who have come into my academies as well as thousands around the world.

Three months after I was given the rudimentary fundamentals of how to do the splits, I was on the floor all three ways. Not only did my flexibility improved by leaps and bounds but my coordination, stamina, and kicking got really good.
