An out of shape 40 something jumps in with a 23 year old soon to be pro
Stepping out of the ring I could feel my nose heating up. I got down and looked at my brother, I asked, “Is my nose bleeding?” He glanced over and said, “No man, it looks good.”
My brother and I had taken a road trip about 2 hours south to the legendary Decatur Boxing Club where Xavier “Bad Pads” Biggs runs the show. His brother was the ’84 Gold Medalist and former Heavy Weight World Champ, Tyrell. Biggs gym is the perfect, old school boxing club, the jazz music, the brick walls, and even Sugar Ray Leonard’s signature on the wall.
As Rocky, said in one of his flics, “It’s too bad we gotta get old.”
It’s always fun to jump in with someone. Luckily, this kid was a nice kid who enjoyed the sparring and wasn’t looking to hurt anyone. As an aging fighter it becomes more and more apparent that the key to longevity is activity! Getting the mind right starts with getting your physical right. So if you’re struggling mentally today, get out and get physical.
