Why did I hit SO hard?
There I was standing in the corner waiting on the first bell, scared to death. Across the ring was a 225lbs Lou Ferrigno looking dude with muscles bulging everywhere. I believe this guy even had muscles in his gums.
I was about 17 or 18 years old at the time and for some experience I figured I’d enter the local tough man downtown Greenville, SC. It had two weight classes, 184 lbs and down was light weight and 185 lbs and up was heavy weight. Not knowing this initially I went in and stepped on the scales at 186 lbs. I figured, what the heck, I could kick and knew that would be a great asset.
When I got in the ring with this ape like man, the athletic commission came to my corner and said, ‘You know you can’t kick don’t you?’ Obviously I didn’t or I wouldn’t have had my shin guards and boots on. I tried to argue a little but to no avail. The commission ruled. So there I was, thinking I could kick and now finding out 30 seconds before the first bell, I couldn’t. Talk about a game plan changer.
At the time my boxing wasn’t my strong point. I was a karate guy who relied on my kicks to save the day at the time. Well, there was no pulling out at this point. I was there so I better fight like someone had stolen my bicycle.
The bell rang, that giant muscle man practically ran at me with one hand cocked about even with his right ear. When he got in range, I just through straight jab at his face. He ate it! Then he drew back with his other hand and commence to try to kill me. I threw a straight left right at his nose…he at that one too. Luckily this big muscle guy knew about as much about fighting as I do about nuclear science.
For the first round it was the same…he’d draw back and I’d hit him twice. This game became pretty fun for me…probably because I was winning. I hit this joker with everything but the ring post in that first round. When he went to sit on his stool between round one and two he was bleeding profusely. Looked like someone had slaughtered a pig in the ring. The bell rang for round two and he stepped out again. I did the same thing. After about 30 more seconds the referee stopped the fight.
I was a happy camper and was virtually unscathed. This Frank Zane looking fellow looked at me before we got out of the ring and said, “HOW COME YOU HIT SO HARD?”
I just smiled and held the ropes for him to exit. I didn’t know then, but I know now. FLEXIBILITY!
Punching power comes from a certain amount of FLEXIBILITY coupled with good timing, great hip rotation, relaxation, and the right amount of torque just at the end of the blow. Some people are natural at it. Some don’t have it. Look at the heavyweights…Mike Tyson vs a let’s say Gerry Cooney. One has the pop, the other doesn’t.
As my boxing coach use to say, ‘that kids got sleeping pills in his hands.’ How do you get those sleeping pills?
Improve your flexibility first and foremost! And you’re in luck…I have the product to do just that.
